CleanCitySense

The idea.

Illegal dumping at container sites poses a growing challenge for many municipalities. The littering of these public spaces not only has a negative impact on the cityscape and the environment but also incurs significant costs for cleanup and disposal. In Saarland alone, according to the Saarland Ministry of the Environment, cleanup costs between 11 and 12 million euros annually.

The proposed solution closes this gap: Through AI-powered image analysis, which generates only anonymous status messages (“Trash detected” / “No trash”), it is now possible for the first time to detect trash outside of containers in a way that complies with data privacy regulations. Combined with fill-level sensors and a visual dashboard, this creates a comprehensive system that brings together existing partial solutions into an integrated approach. The modular design of the technical architecture also allows for flexible adaptation to other urban scenarios, such as monitoring fire department access routes, loading zones, or parking areas. Analyzing the movement patterns of crowds or individuals would also be conceivable.
