Detecting and Locating Leaks in the Drinking Water Supply System
Water losses pose not only an environmental challenge but also an economic one. In Germany alone, water losses in the public water supply system amount to approximately 473 million cubic meters annually, which corresponds to about 10% of the total water supply. This innovation project was launched to address this challenge and to act in response to current general economic issues.
The idea.
The vision is to improve infrastructure management in water utilities through the use of digital technologies, in order to detect and locate leaks as early as possible and thereby reduce the high levels of water loss in the public drinking water supply.
DigiWasser's approach includes the development of a modular toolkit for detecting and characterizing leaks, as well as the creation of a comprehensive solution to reduce water losses. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are being investigated, and a demonstrator is being developed to test the various approaches, which will then be tested in the field.
Challenge.
While there is awareness of the problem of water loss in water supply systems, no feasible solutions have yet been developed. Water losses occur at various points and locations within the systems, which must first be identified. Solutions can then be developed to meet specific requirements.
